Introduction and Welcome |
| 9:00 |
John & Pete will set the tone for the weekend by playing and talking through a couple of their current favourite numbers |
| |
Performance Masterclass with John |
Getting it to Swing! |
| 9:30 |
You play a piece of your choice, John will comment, then you play again applying what you’ve learnt.
Hugely beneficial for the player and those listening.
|
This will be a session aimed at getting your playing to 'feel' right. What steps can be taken to make your swing playing, the basis of most jazz, to sound authentic, 'in the pocket' and more hip to listen to? Pete gives a personal insight into this, the essence of jazz! (Suitable for all levels)

Playing with time: Fabulous Phrasing |
| 11:00 |
John’s masterclass continues |
How to make your playing sound more convincing and exciting. So, you can swing, but you don't just want to be playing an endless stream of 8th notes do you? Pete invites you to understand time, literally 'play' with the time, and phrase using all of the lovely techniques available to guitarists. |

Performance Masterclass With Pete |
Charlie Christian - BeBop Masters Unmasked |
| 13:30 |
If you want to play accompanied, it’s a good idea to bring along your version of the chords. You can enlist another attendee or Pete/John to accompany you.
|
When BBC Radio 3 did a program about Charlie Christian it was John Etheridge
they turned to. John explained the how and why of Charlie's sound and then whipped-out his 150 and
showed them how it was really done. Expect the un-edited version which they couldn't broadcast here! |

Building a Solo |
"Outside" playing |
| 15:30 |
Bring a standard of your choice that you are
familiar with, play it with Pete, who will then guide you in making the most out
of your playing abilities. The building of the solo should also be reflected in the
accompanist's responses, so be prepared to be called on to comp too. |
John reveals the secrets of Scofield et al, at their most harmonically adventurous. |
| 16:30 |
Informal jamming / eating / until concert |

Sunday |
|
| |
Pete & John demonstrate techniques and practices for playing (two guitars) with the rhythm section
|
| 9:30 |
We will be joined by the professional rhythm section (Raph Mizraki bass and Russ Morgan drums)
for Sunday
|
| |
Pete facilitates and coaches players |
Wes Montgomery - BeBop Masters Unmasked |
| 11:00 |
as they lead and comp with the Giant Steps all-star rhythm section. This is a unique experience – noticeably different from "playing with your mates!"
|
What wouldn't you give to be able to play like Wes? What's the betting that John'll cover it
all in this session and with time to spare? |
| |
|
Pete's Fingerboard Familiarisation |
| 13:00 |
John assists players leading and comping with the rhythm section.
|
Do you immediately know where you are at any place on the fingerboard? Can you play your scales and arpeggios in several positions on the neck? If not, this session could be the stimulus you've needed. Pete suggests various methods for getting to know your way around more fluently. (You know who you are, and you know it's good for you!)
